The first point to define is the location. The common point between the largest capitals of the world is undoubtedly their large area often accompanied by a terrible traffic that prevents to cross the city in less than two.
It is therefore important that you define the area in which you want to stay. If this is the first time in the city, opt for a central and convenient neighborhood that will allow you to quickly reach the main centers of interest. If you have already come, why not define the activities (visits, restaurants, bars, …) where you want to go and choose a hotel in the same area. Or just a neighborhood that you want to discover: this was the case during my last visit to London, I wanted to discover the Mayfair district which I heard a lot of good and so I chose my accommodation in the heart of this district.
2) Know your essentials
At each hotel its specificities! Some will be ultra-urban, ideally placed but often more cramped, while others will be located in more residential areas. Do you want to spend time in transport or be close to everything? You may want to be a spa to combine this city break with a little relaxation.
A blatant example in Bangkok remains the example of the pool. Most centrally located hotels have rooftop pools and unfortunately they are often small, with few sunbeds and much less pleasant. During my last stay last December, I really wanted to take a few days of relaxation in Bangkok that’s why I opted for the Peninsula which has a beautiful pool (and huge!) By the river. All this remains a question of choice!
3) What is the budget?
There are several ranges in Luxury Indonesia travel … and several room categories! Depending on the attendance, prices can increase very strongly, it may also be that there are only rooms or suites of higher categories that will blow your budget! Even if you sleep in luxury hotels, the budget is a criterion that must sometimes be taken into account (especially in cities like New York or London for example where prices are very fast!).
Some hotels inherit a superb reputation and a remarkable history. I think for example at the Ritz Paris that we no longer present at the hotel La Mamounia in Marrakech, The Savoy in London, … These are mythical establishments in which the service and quality are often exceptional.
5) Luxury hotel groupings
The largest collections of luxury hotels are often an easy and convenient way to find upscale accommodation around the world. Take for example The Leading Hotels of the World, it is to date 375 hotels in 75 countries or Relays & Châteaux, a pledge of luxury French and exceptional all over the world with more than 500 hotels in the catalog.
6) Watch blogs
Difficult for me not to advise you to make your opinion on blogs … because that’s exactly what I do when I want to choose a hotel. I like the idea of seeing “real photos” not those made by a very talented photographer who will highlight only the qualities of the establishment but also to see how it really is. This allows me to give me a more objective opinion (with its qualities but also its defects because even if there is little it is still the case).
